At long last Joseph Schmidt’s films are now available on DVD and in a restored version, so much better (and more complete) than the pirates can offer or is available on youtube. Moreover the edition has very modestly priced and should belong in everybody’s collection. Nostalgia, schmaltzy, unreal all descriptions are true when talking about these films but one buys these things mainly for the tenor’s appearances and they are many. Going from the heartbreaking ‘mal d’amore’ to his top hit ‘Ein Lied geht um die Welt’. There’s a nice booklet included in German only.
